i know the world is upside down, as we know it
but my grandpa and my pa used to say this, when they grew old
and we kids did not understand what they were talking about, because we had not lived their lives

the problems we are facing at the moment in jazz
are
as it is always the case-

very simple

jazz is lacking of audiences !

if there were audiences en-mass
and there would be one club or concert place in new york city , or any other town in the world :being crowded every night

the neighbour establishments would hire jazzmusicians and so forth

i am doing since 4o years childrenworkshops

in which i am showing the kids how improvisation , as we jazznusicians do them , go.
they love it
within 3 hard working workshop days they learn and love to improvise:

alone, in collectives with the whole 4o workshops participants and my bands
together

their brothers and sisters love it
their parents their grandparents
their schoolmates ...........

a woman of 5o came by at my concert the other day, and said
dont you recognize me, and she was smiling
37 years ago you turned me on to jazz when i was 13, i am the celloplayer
you turned me on to jazz and changed my life !
and made an alert and jazzperson out of me.
thank you an d gave me a hug

i have hundreds of those successes in turning people on to jazz

because when they can play themselves, they UNDERSTAND how jazzmusic is been played
why don't we have records stores anymore, where they sell jazz cds and lps and dvds ?

lack of audiences

it is because of the multitude of jazz stiles and different directions and the commercial watering down of jazz in the
7o s 8o s and 9o s

and no united efforts
for turning on young people to jazz and therewith creating new audiences for the future.

my mentor, louis armstrong ,was that for his generation :an ambassador !

we are facing this catastrophy
of
no concerts
no disks selling
no jazzradios, except the pretty commercial internet jazz radios

they say
downloads

but that does not work at all in jazz

the commercial hyped , may be

but i haven#t got a penny from a company whenever i sold them the tapes
the -if at all- advance was the only money i ever got for me and my bands

thats why i installed my birth record label in 1969 to at least publish the music, we musicians played it !

in sports and classical music and any other sections of life
people are organized and are in fact taking care that the new generations are trained and turned on when they are kids to have the new generations involved

but in jazz , there has been a total breakdown, because of the commercial sell out

and our real craft , the training has been left to schools, which start to define jazz with learning how to play standards
the melodies and chord changes of broadway musicals !!!!!!!!

what about louis armstrong,j.c. higginbothom,georg lewis, johhnny and baby dodds, fletcher henderson, even benny goodman and lionel hampton
bix beiderbecke, eddie condon, the great swing bands etc.
that music defined jazz, the bebop, the hard bop, the cool, the free
the great intrumentalists with their individuaities of personal improvisations,like artists who paint a painting, or writers poets writing books
the beauty and the brutal existenz of life.
i have made about 3o or 4o DVDs to document my workshops
because they do work. and they are so encouraging , you can see the fun the kids are having to
COMMUNICATE with the playing of improvised music
and what great individual music within collectively functioning they deliver
all by themselves
in the spur of the moment
like reall jazz is been played
jeanne lee and myself have been working all our lives to hand these great inner jazz disciplins down to the current generations of children all over the world
for their own creativity and to become our future audiences.
i have been doing these workshops all over the world since 1972, when the german government at the time,
asked me to create a concept for new schoolmusic in the classes.
the guggenheim museum once hired us and many cultur interested people hired, and still are hiring us around the globe, the GOETHE INSTITUT etc..
i also involve young dancers ,because young people love the dance which has been sprung off from the children of jazz's the hip hop times, the original breakdance
and have developed with an incredible dancer from tadchikistan, prince alegs a direct communicative
aktion and reaktion interplay , something completely new and inventive to the jazz and the dance scene
on any level, classical or jazzdance, so new and so challenging, that we got mentioned to have developed a revolutionary new way of improvising music and dance concept , the world has been looking for, whenever music and dance began !
and the kids are having fun, to use these new invention , my music + dance improvisations have become a family cultur to some households now the parents come and want me to teach THEM those improvisational play offs, teachers want me to teach them, so they can keep up with the children !
next year we have developed classes for ordinary school classes , to teach curriculums with the concepts of my childrenworkshops
our generations have forgotten , by way of these jazz schools, that music, jazzmusic is also dance
it is one of the ingredients from african ! origin.
when i was a young jazzmusician and bandleder in the 5o s and 6o s
we had a dance floor in front of the stage
and people were dancing from jitterbourg to waltzes and swing until the mid sixties
when you play and people dancing to your rhythms there is a communication involved !
i understood miles davis's new music in the 7o ies, when i was dancing to it with jeanne at a party after one of our concerts in jugoslavia, way back
but our governments very rarely hand out money for me and my crews and to local organisations to support jazz
or support this valuable 3 days children workshops
i have been reaching about 4o ooo children over the 4o years , i am doing that
because politicians do not work on handing out real cultur, to help to get a community, a democracy working
or just support the arts for the arts.
germany is a possession of the united states, and our conditions here, are now, after 66 years of the same structure as in the usa.
people are here conditioned after TV and so forth as in the USA
do not get any other motions because you see some of our artists , like me
dedicating our lives to the progression of a beloved music , we call jazz
europe is down. within my life time it has changed from a cultural diversity into a masspopulation within a "democracy" which is faceless and underdog-ly educationally corrupted.
jazz has been helping people to survive in these times
if we, the jazzpeople want that jazz survives we have to take actions ! NOW
( i am not mad with these "jazz schools" at least jazz has been surviving at these schools for the last 3o years, but the generations of jazz musicians coming out of these schools, lack the spirit except the few who had the spirit in the first place. but that is the story of jazz anyway
out of the many , there are just a few giants
trained in life or trained by schools
i just thought i mention these concepts to be done for the survival of jazz, to whom it may concern
best wishes for all of you
and if you have other concepts for the jazz survival and creating audiences for our music
let me know. it is about time we start .do not let us wait anymore !!!!
any way to get new audiences should be fair to be tried.
i am just offerering the profound one, create audiences who understand and know how it is been played !
i guess those are the most valuable ones.

turn on, one person a day to listen to jazz !

and within 2 years you can have jazz concerts in your city again !

Art heeds the clarion call of the Occupy Wall Street movement at AC Institute. This special show of posters is dedicated to the spirit evinced by the patriots at Liberty Square. Original, commisioned artwork will be shown beside authentic posters from the protest and will be on view for one week. In addition to an opening there will be a closing with poetry and performance. The artists will then take their artwork to Liberty Square. This action will be filmed.

Curated by poet and lyricist Holly Anderson and poet and activist Jeffrey Cyphers Wright. AC Institute, Holly Anderson and Jeffrey Cyphers Wright have the right to refuse any work.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen continues its 2011 World Tour with a Halloween Spectacular on Monday, October 31, 2011 at Drom, 85 Avenue A (between 5th & 6th Streets), Manhattan, New York City. The classic New York City Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village will take place not far from the Arkestra extravaganza where classic Sun Ra charts like "Halloween in Harlem" and "Unmask the Batman" are likely to make the setlist. Doors are at 8:00 pm and the show starts at 9:30 pm. Ticket reservations are $15 and available by phoning Drom at 212-777-1157.

How are you grooving?

I'm back from the sea of curse.
The geigercounters did not indicate especially high value through the voyage, but sometimes slightly high regardless of the distance from Fukushima nuclear plants.
I went to the point at 35km from the plants.
I was scared but I took my spirit and did everything carefully.
During the observation at 60km from the plants, we felt strong vertical shakes!!
It happened just below... off Fukushima.
The crews were saying it was the first time they felt the quake on the open sea!
Thank you God, I'm still here...
But the truth is straight ahead...
"Look Over Yonder" is all in my brain...
Bad bad boomerang.
I know I got to create new boomerang for tomorrow, eternal feedback~~~~~~~~~

Why are we dedicating this year’s event to Layla Love? As a foundation for the collective, we are drawn to Layla’s international voice, which sees no color, race, gender or religious differences. In our view, Layla’ art is a reflection of collective cultural values that embodies the timely vision of synergy of intercultural dialogues across language barriers and national borders. A picture tells a thousand words that do not need translation. While all these are good reasons, Layla is also currently struggling against a rare disease, Dystonia, which is attacking her eyes and threatening to take away a bright career from this young woman. Layla Love is currently undergoing surgery and we hope to have some of her works and products on display for sale at the event. Proceeds will go towards Layla Love’s Dystonia treatment.

Alice Coltrane was a composer, improviser, guru, and widow of John Coltrane. Over the course of her musical life, she synthesized a
wide range of musical genres including gospel, rhythm-and-blues, bebop, free jazz, Indian devotional song, and Western art music.
Her childhood experiences playing for African-American congregations in Detroit, the ecstatic and avant-garde improvisations she
performed on the bandstand with her husband John Coltrane, and her religious pilgrimages to India reveal themselves on more than
twenty albums of original music for the Impulse and Warner Brothers labels. In the late 1970s she became a swami, directing an
alternative spiritual community in Southern California.

Exploring her transformation from Alice McLeod, Detroit church pianist and bebopper, to guru Swami Turiya Sangitananda,
Franya Berkman’s new book, Monument Eternal: The Music of Alice Coltrane (Wesleyan University Press, 2010). illuminates her music and,
in turn, reveals the exceptional fluidity of American religious practices in the second half of the twentieth century. Most of all, this book
celebrates the hybrid music of an exceptional, boundary-crossing African-American artist. Dr. Berkman’s talk will focus primarily on two
aspects of Berkman’s scholarly approach: ethnomusicological life history as a mode of inquiry in jazz studies, and the necessity of defining
“a spiritual aesthetics” in exploring Alice Coltrane’s work.

i searched for a stick
poked the bloated bulb one scale broke loose like a husk
shaped like a fingernail blew away like paper
over my shoulder the sand made the highway crawl
black and wavy my car looked important
a fat person moved noisily by with two small children
on either hip disappeared down the beach as decorated genitals
under an umbrella rocks stuck my buttered body
i caught one under my nail and flicked it with my thumb
pena said: 'you look like a sugared strawberry.'
we better get going before it gets cold and it makes us too hot
pena danced like a wounded stork - held her foot up
screaming: 'i have been bitten by something!'
i consoled her - you have been attacked by a coke cap
it's angry teeth prints fading
pena exclaimed: 'that's the raspberries.'
a banana like a limp star drooped from her free hand
this situation pleased the old man
his face smiled leather laughter
the thermos opened - the inside of the car
tasted like a caramel you walked by
this is cold - this is too - somebody will see if we do something about it - it's too day
you wanted to - it was your idea - it's damp 'n' cold 'n' noisy at night though - cops might arrest us - who cares how we go together but jesus?

throbbing from where he had been poked earlier that day
while posing as a dead fish
one fly had crawled through the nostrils in his intricate trout replica mask
and had somehow got fouled-up in his intricate air-bulb atomizer breathing device
and it whistled and stank and tickled with every breath
one leg had been torn off where the tube went in his mouth
he could feel it hanging from his lip
and the thought of it almost made him vomit
he was numb from the neck down
and was too exhausted at this point to dig himself out of the sand
his whole scheme had been foiled
by the fog that gathered on the inside
of the detailed view holes
that even upon close inspection

GARY LUCAS, featured guitar soloist and member of the final edition of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, celebrates the career of visionary American maverick genius Don Van Vliet a/k/a Captain Beefheart, who changed the face of music forever over a career spanning a dozen brilliant albums, from 1967's groundbreaking "Safe as Milk" through 1969's radical "Trout Mask Replica" and finishing with 1982's uncompromising "Ice Cream for Crow".

A legendary composer/vocalist/songwriter/bandleader/poet/sculptor and painter, Don Van Vliet has been honored over the years by everyone from Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer to Bob Dylan, Bono, David Lynch and Anton Corbijn—but is still relatively (and unfairly) unknown to the public at large.

During the symposium Gary Lucas will show rare archival footage of the band, spin unreleased tracks, project slides of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings, discuss the history of the group and many of the great musicians who came through the ranks of The Magic Band, and illustrate Van Vliet's quirky and idiosyncratic methodologies and techniques with a live solo guitar performance.

Less than two months’ prior, Carlos Santana had proposed to her onstage following a drum solo in Illinois, and she accepted. Today, December 19th is Cindy and Carlos’ wedding day, in Maui, and we celebrate the union of two great artists with this previously unheard discussion.

Among the topics are: Sonny Sharrock and Alice Coltrane, who share the birthday of August 27th; Cindy's vocal rock project in collaboration with Italian producer Rosario; her co-production of Portuguese artist Paulo Gonzo; Another Lifetime, a tribute to Tony Williams; the Bitches Brew Revisited project celebrating the landmark Miles Davis album; Cindy's message to young artists; and her candid thoughts on Carlos Santana.

With equally deep roots in classical music old and new and in free improvisation and new jazz, Robert Dick is known worldwide for creating revolutionary visions of the flute's musical role. Dick lives in New York City and is on the faculty of New York University. He holds a B.A. from Yale University and an M.M. in composition from the Yale School of Music. Robert Dick is one of only two Americans ever to be awarded both Composers Fellowships (twice) and a Solo Recitalist Grant by the National Endowment for the Arts. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and commissions from the Jerome Foundation, Fromm Music Foundation, Mary Flagler Cary Trust, the city of Zurich, the Philharmonie in Cologne, the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth, and many other organizations.

Dick has given masterclasses and had residencies at hundreds of universities, colleges and conservatories in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has more than twenty CDs of original solo and chamber works and collaborations with fellow creative musicians in such groups as the Ambient/Overdrive band King Chubby. Other CDs feature music by Telemann (the Fantasies for flute alone) and Jimi Hendrix.

Robert Dick has also worked on redesigning the flute itself. His invention, the Glissando Headjoint®, does for the flute what the "whammy bar" does for the electric guitar. "Sonny Sharrock Way" to be named in Ossining New York, October 2, 2010

Hi folks,

An old saw of the jazz radio announcer's game is to say something like, "This guy is so important that there should be a street named after him." As we know, in reality (at least here in the USA) it almost never actually happens. Well, now it is happening and I think it is incumbent on us to make every effort to make our listeners aware of it.

The village of Ossining, NY (in Westchester County) is naming the street where Sonny Sharrock lived "Sonny Sharrock Way." Sonny was a blistering guitarist who never compromised his vision for his audience or other musicians or anyone else. While his commitment to his art earned respect from artists like Miles Davis and Pharoah Sanders (he played and recorded with both of them), he spent close to a decade in total obscurity before re-emerging in the 1980's to make the best recordings of his career. He died in 1994 at age 53.

Sonny was not only the poster child for the type of artist we at WKCR love to get behind but he was also a great friend to to the station; he was interviewed and performed on the air multiple times. A fantastic way to honor his memory would be to simply read the following announcement...[and] by all means, do yourself a favor and give one of his CDs a spin-- either on the air or just for yourself-- and experience his luminous spirit.

The End Of Monoculture

We are experiencing a revolution. Caused by the computer, aided by the Internet, old media monoliths are crumbling and seedlings are popping up all over. The old guard is protesting, wannabes are struggling for a toehold in the decaying old game and newbies are reinventing the media business unchallenged and unknown. And to outsiders, trying to make sense of it all, chaos reigns. Desiring focus, those with loud voices demand a return to the earlier era. But no one can turn back the hands of time. Change has occurred which has caused a rupture in the entire fabric of our country. And so far, no one has been able to make sense out of the result.

Such delusion wouldn’t fly forty years ago, when there were only three TV networks and a Fairness Doctrine that eliminated dissemination of demented ideas. But today, every insane theory and plot has a website, with adherents who refuse to see the other side. They don’t have to. Democrats read the HuffPo and Republicans read Drudge. Do you think everyone’s going to pay attention to Top Forty music?

Of course not, because they’ve got choice. Listeners pursue their dream down a zillion different nooks and crannies. The lame Pandora gets traction because no one knows about Slacker. Children embrace Disney stars because their parents haven’t yet removed the controls from their browsers. We’ve got many different camps, oftentimes operating in ignorance. People say there’s no good new music because the mainstream outlets are promoting crap. When the truth is music is in a glorious time, you’ve just got to know where to look. And when you do look, you’ve got to separate the wheat from the chaff. There are many more acts than before. And most of them are terrible. It’s too daunting to delve in.

And then you’ve got the old guard saying that we’ve got to return to their way. Which is an impossibility, because of choice.

Then there are the newspapers. Which, like record labels, say they’re entitled to survive. But why should I read the national news in the "Los Angeles Times" when the "New York Times" does it so much better and it’s just a click away online? Used to be you couldn’t read the "New York Times" in L.A. But those days are gone.

As are the days when the "New York Times" was the ultimate authority. There’s a plethora of bloggers to not only critique what the "New York Times" has to say, but to trumpet stories the Gray Lady ignores.

And despite its vaunted place atop the print media pile, the "New York Times" doesn’t like its authority challenged. But it’s got no choice.

Things used to be different. MTV anointed stars and the public bought the records and went to the shows. And radio was complicit, stations played the MTV hits. And there was a limited number of releases, because distribution was a barrier to the entry of independents.

Now anybody can get their track on iTunes and MTV has stricken "Music Television" from its moniker and radio is lost, playing the hits of yesteryear or the vapid concoctions of today in between twenty odd minutes of commercials. People have got choice. And they’re exercising it.

It’s kind of like the transition from AM to FM in the sixties. AM supporters decried FM. The signal was weak. The bands were unknown. But the free-format stations ultimately killed AM. Music left the AM band completely. And FM acts without single hits were slaying in stadiums while AM acts were lucky to appear on bland television shows and play the lounge in Vegas.

Only now, imagine an FM band with thousands of stations! You’ve got freedom of choice, but you’re not sure how to exercise it.

This chaotic period is coming to a close. Suddenly, there are acts plying the boards with no terrestrial radio airplay who are well known by their audience and can survive quite handsomely in their own niche. But, since there’s no longer a pyramid, no longer the anointment of MTV airplay, there’s not a defined breakthrough into the stratosphere. The build just continues, slowly, but surely. Yet now the indie acts are not quite so indie, we’ve heard of twenty or thirty of them. The landscape is firming up. For everybody but the old guard.

The old guard is losing power. It’s more expensive than ever to create a hit that fewer people listen to or care about. Top Forty radio is about beats created by producers, radio anthems concocted by committee. It’s purely commerce. Whereas the soul of music is elsewhere.

So if you wanna be a rock and roll star…
1. Know that people are looking for music. They’re inured to listening online and on the go. More people are listening to more music than ever before.

2. Know that the money is not in music. The money is in tech, on Wall Street. It’s not about theft of recordings, it’s a change in society. Music doesn’t drive it. There’s more money in sports. You’ve got to play because you love it.

3. It takes longer than ever to truly make it. The old wave insta-stardom the major labels specialize in… Those acts never survived the hype in the eighties and nineties, why should they now? Overexposed, they’re thrown on the scrapheap in just a few years.

4. Practice makes perfect. Just because you can make music, put it up on iTunes and YouTube and…doesn’t mean anybody should listen to it, that anybody should care. Marketing means less than ever before. Hell, if you truly want to make it as a musician, you’re better off cutting the Internet cord and practicing and gigging for five years before you put your music online, where people will find it. But traction will be slow. And you might not get rich. Are you willing to sign up for this route?

5. Don’t listen to anybody with a toehold in today’s music firmament unless they’re in the live business. Everybody else is caught up in the tsunami of change and just wants you to keep the old paradigm going. They’re clueless. They’re royalty still living in the castle trying to fend off a public that’s been maligned and is joyous in tearing down old institutions by ignoring them. Yes, that’s how the impact of Top Forty wonders has declined. The public is ignoring them.

6. If you’re a fan, don’t believe anything you read in the mainstream media. Trust your friends. If you find something good, continue to tell your friends. Protest high prices. Support your favorite acts. What the old guard doesn’t understand is this is instinct, to only buy what you can afford and only promote what you like. They’ve been living beyond their means selling crap so long the whites of their eyes are brown and they’ll say anything to maintain their lifestyles. That’s not about music, but money. But now you only get money if you make it about the music.

NEW YORK – Garry Marshall Shider, iconic diaper-clad singer and guitarist and right-hand to George Clinton in the Parliament/Funkadelic menagerie, died on June 16, 2010 from complications stemming from an ongoing battle with lung and brain cancer.

It is with a broken heart to say that on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, that we lost one of the greatest vocalist, guitarist, music arranger and showman of our time-Garry "Star Child" Shider.

Over the past four months, Garry fought each day against one of the deadliest diseases, so that he could do what he loved, which was to return to the stage. Which he did. For those who know Garry, you know that his determination was fierce and that he was not going to give up on life.

Over the past forty years, Garry put his stamp and signature of everything that he did musically. HIs talent was and always will be unmatched.

I, along with my fundraising partner, Pete Shipman, Jr. and the Shider family would personally like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who so generously made a donation to the Garry Shider Medical Fund. You all reached out unselfishly in Garry's time of need. We cannot thank you enough. Also, we want to personally thank Rob Max and the Sweet Relief Musican's Fund, for assisting us with our fundraising administration, and Aaron and Muruga Bookvich and Darrell McNeil and the Black Rock Coalition family for stepping up immediately to assist Pete and I with our fundraising efforts by organizing benefit concerts which are upcoming. We must also thank all of the artists who truly wanted to help Garry by immediately signing on to perform at the benefit concerts.

We hope that everyone throughout the world will continue to support musicians that are in need. Remember, no person should be denied healthcare. We urge you all to continue to keep healthcare and health insurance for all, on the minds of those who will listen. Garry would want it that way.

Fundraising Team for the Garry Shider Medical Fund

Fundraisers organized by the Black Rock Coalition (BRC), Sweet Relief and Soul-Patrol.com ahead of Garry’s transition, will move forward as planned at Multimedia Arts Center in Bloomfield, NJ on Saturday, July 10 and at B.B. King’s in New York on Sunday, July 11. “The family was always candid about this being a possibility,” said Darrell M. McNeill, director of operations for the BRC. “We prayed for the best but were prepared for the worst. Now we need to tend to Garry’s legacy—the funk must go on. We’re celebrating the music he created and will keep him alive through the music.”

Shider had been in an extremely dire state of affairs, fighting cancer, touring whenever he could. Like so many performers of Shider’s renown, he didn’t have health insurance. The Black Rock Coalition and Sweet Relief are working in partnership to raise funds and administer to the costs of Garry’s care and funeral arrangements.

“Garry’s unfortunate departure won’t lessen the financial burden on his family,” McNeill added. “Whatever money we raise will ensure they won’t have to deal with any outside problems. It will be difficult enough adjusting to his absence.”

Confirmed performers include Living Colour, Bernie Worrell (SociaLybrium; ex-P-Funk, ex-Talking Heads), Miss Lady Kier (ex-Deee-Lite), Melvin Gibbs (SociaLybrium, Harriet Tubman, ex-Rollins Band) and Ronny Drayton. FUNK-KIN, a New Jersey based band comprised of Shider’s brothers and cousins, will open at MMAC show only. Recently added to the bill were P-Funk guitarist Dwayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight for both shows and Jerome “Bigfoot” Brailey for the B.B. King’s show only. On both nights, there will be an all-star P-Funk jam, powered by the Black Rock Coalition Orchestra. Other special guests will be named in later press updates.
